No Idea How to Start Networking These 5 Tips Will Help You Get Going

No Idea How to Start Networking These 5 Tips Will Help You Get GoingNo Idea How to Start Networking These 5 Tips Will Help You Get GoingWhen youre hunting for a job, theres no better shortcut than having an in at the company youre approaching. After all, the business world stands and falls on relationships. If youre ever felt like all successful people know each other, you werent too far from the truth. But what if you dont know how to start networking?Once you know the right people, only sky is the limit. But how can you become a member of that secret group?1. Make friends, not networking connectionsWould you want to work with someone who only sees you as a networking connection? Probably not. No one wants to be taken as a mere stepping stone on your way to getting what you want. And you probably dont want to see yourself as a networker either. As the old saying goes When money is involved, everyones a liar. As a result, fruchtwein people in the business sector have developed a keen nose for people full of bull. People want to foster reliable relationships, not utilitarian connections. If you approach people with the latter kind of attitude, you will often come across as disingenuous. You already know how to network.Whats my advice then? These are real people, just as we are. Always think of them as multifaceted human beings with their own problems and motivations (and then try to help them solve their problems). Dont forget - you already know how to network. Youve been building relationships all your life. Now use the same skills to intentionally build relationships with a bunch of highly interesting, creative, and successful people.Dont be all about business. Foster meaningful relationships.Be different, upbeat, cheerful, yet professional. Have a good vibe about yourself.Make conversations about them, not yourself.Know your boundaries. Never hard sell.Try to understand their problems first. Youll learn something valuable and itll pay off later.2. Beginwith pe ople you already knowYou dont need to meet new people to start networkingeffectively. Actually, you probably already know some people who might help you out - even if they dont work in your target industry. If youre a fresh graduate, you can always turn to your friends and family. Since they already know you and trust you, theyre much more likely to help you out than complete strangers.they already know you and trust you.Find your universitys alumni database and look for people in your field. Reach out to them and ask them for short interviews to get advice on your career. Since youve studied at the same university, you probably have many things in common already. Still, try to find the ones who have background similar to yours. For instance, maybe youre an expat from the US whos looking for a marketing job in France. Trust me - if you find someone with a similar story, therell be a special bond. Also, dont forget about people who have given you guidance before. Perhaps youve had un iversity professors who took you under their wings. Or senior co-workers from your last job who taught you a great deal. Update them on where youre in life at the moment and ask them to meet and catch up over coffee.Once youve reached to the people you already know, you can expand to their acquaintances and finally strangers once the process becomes second nature.3. When approaching someone new, find a way to help them firstIf someones worth approaching, their time is probably more valuable than yours. Take Bill Gates, for instance. He earns $114 per second hes alive. Its literally not worth his time to pick a dropped $100 from the ground. Imagine the audacity of asking him for 5 minutes of his time.Even when youre not approaching the wealthiest man in the world, never assume their time or advice comes free of charge. This could easily close the door for you indefinitely. For this reason, you want to want to provide your network with value first.Never assume their time or advice com es free of charge. It doesnt really matter whether youre a fresh graduate or someone with years of experience under your belt. Research the company/partie youre approaching and find something small to contribute. Dont forget its not only about being actually useful, its also about making the gesture. Most importantly, do it without expecting anything in return. If you get rejected anyway, dont show disappointment. Next time will be better. In any case, once youve established a new contact by providing something valuable, dont ask for a favour straight away. For the time being, its all about them you need to invest your time and effort first. Dont worry, it will pay off eventually - sometimes in the most unexpected ways.4. Follow up. Dont let your relationships collect dustMost connectionshave an expiration date. Some networkers reach out to someone and as soon as they get what they want, they disappear until they need something again. Dont be that person and keep your relationships al ive by reaching out to your contacts regularly. Once you disappear off their radar, youll be easily forgotten, the trust youve built will diminish, and youll have to start again from scratch. Moreover, you always want to follow up on your previous meetings and emails. Never forget to thank them for their help or advice. If you discussed any further steps with your contact, reaffirm your intention to follow through and thank them specifically for anything they have offered to do.5. Never ask for a job directly. Ask for advice and information instead. Why? After all, you might feel like you dont really need more information. It can even seem counterproductive. Still, when you simply ask for adviceYou dont put them in an awkward position. After all, they dont know you, theyll naturally hesitate to recommend you for a job. When youre being too pushy, you destroy opportunities that could arise later down the line. You dont look like you want others to solve your problems for you. When you as k for advice, you make an impression of someone who wants to learn and improve. Most people are eagerto help those who are already grappling with a problem on their own.Theyll get to know you better. If you show yourself as a likeable and dependable person, they might even recommend you for a job in the end. This brings me to my last point. As you have probably already figured out, networking is not about getting what you want. It revolves entirely around building a network of inspiring relationships that can lead you to the most unexpected of places. Who knows, instead of getting what you want, youmight even get into situations youd consider too good to be true. Thats the magic of having a network of great relationships.Few more tipsUpdate your LinkedIn profile. It will be the first place your contact will look once youve contacted them. At the same time, LinkedIn is like a speed dating site for professionals. You might get noticed even if youre not looking for something new.Establish new contacts both online and offline. Dont be just an anonymous email - be a friendly face. On the other hand, dont forget to develop a robust online presence.Dont limit your outreach to people who are obviously connected to your target industry. This will greatly limit the opportunities youll find.Dont be a hater. Dont say anything negative. Never badmouth your previous employers or colleagues. Youll be seen as a negative person and quickly dismissed by your befhigung contacts. Remember that negativity doesnt build trust.Sit with the right company. When youre at social gatherings, dont sit with your co-workers and get to know new people. If you never roam outside of your social circles, youll never get further than where youre now.Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments

Conduct your Next Interview as if it were the First

Conduct your Next Interview as if it were the FirstConduct your Next Interview as if it were the FirstConduct your Next Interview as if it were the First RossheimYour small geschftsleben has achieved the revenue level where you can and must hire your next employee. Candidates are coming this afternoon for the interview. Are you ready to make one of the fruchtwein important decisions of the year?Heres whatyou do look around your business, review your interview questionsandmake sure your new hireprovides a worthy return on investment just likeyour first hire did.Devote sufficient time to conduct and prepare for interviews. You know from experience (perhaps both positive and negative) that hiring decisions are among the most significant that you make. So allocate proportionate time to the process, especially for interviewing. Its important to slow down, says Bruce Bachenheimer, professor of management at Pace University. Small business owners are typically dealing with a myriad of cri tical issues and many are in a rush to hire. Consider using an interview guidefor better hiring.Learn the details of the open position. You cant know all the tasks that your people perform everyday unless you ask. Ask the person currently in the role their daily schedule, says Jason Carney of WorkSmart Systems, a professional employer organization.Know the specific duties and responsibilities of the open position, and be familiar with the job role and how it contributes to the overall business.Know the candidate before you shake hands. Its simple You wont win over the best candidates unless you prove that youre interested in their careers. Thoroughly research the candidate, says Sandra Lewis, of Worldwide 101, a virtual assistant service.Ive been part of many interviews where the interviewer got confused about who the interviewee was they got the background wrong or asked a question obviously geared towards someone else.Ask broad questions to prompt candidates to reveal themselves . Begin by asking the opposite of yes-no questions. Ask generic, open-ended questions and see how they answer, says attorney Jonathan Broder, owner of Strategic Professional Staffing. How they respond and what they decide to share with you will reveal a lot about how they think and who they are.Ask detailed questions to assess expertise. After youve gotten the candidate to reveal himself or herself, drill down to assess subject-matter expertise and analytical skills with mora specific interview questions. You might even bring in a current employee in a similar role to help evaluate her or his prospective peer.Find out what the candidate knows about your small business. Whether from the local newspaper or your web site or public records, theres a lot that a candidate can and therefore should find out about your business before coming to speak with you. Candidates level of knowledge is a good indicator both of their genuine interest in your trade and their research abilities. Take th is opportunity to test them.Pose a question regarding an issue your company has recently confronted.Maybe youve had a customer servicesnafu. Or a human resources issue. Or a cash-flow glitch. Lay out the situation and ask the candidate how they would go about resolving it.Suit the questions to the job and your companys culture. Your small company culture is water, and you are the fish who is so immersed that you cant even see it. But you ignore whats invisible at your peril.Ask two types of questions, says Angelo Kinicki , a professor of management at the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. The first type should be behavioral interview questions that assess if the candidate has the knowledge, skills, and competence to do the job. The second kind of question should focus on person-culture fit.Observe their communication style. You may have seen it happen An otherwise competent hire starts work at a small business and a wave of misunderstandings begets a tsunami of mishaps. Nows your chance to try to head off such trouble.Have the candidate join a staff discussion, react to a difficult test situation, engage in a discussion on an issue important to the team over a casual lunch, says Bachenheimer. Carefully observe body language, temper, congeniality and other traits not just oral communications.Keep the interview legal. While youre doing all this productive probing, take care to keep the discussion professional at all times. If a question feels too personal and intrusive, it probably is, says Broder, who is an attorney. To ensure you dont expose yourself to legal liability, stick to questions that pertain only to the candidates job history, experience, education and skills. Many ill-advised hiring managers ask about how the candidates home life will affect availability for work this can be illegal as well as unethical. Inform yourself and be sure you follow a legal hiring process.

The one thing to keep in mind before investing your money

The one thing to keep in mind before investing your moneyThe one thing to keep in mind before investing your moneyInvesting money is one of the easiest ways to both save money and grow wealth. Rather than keeping your money stashed away in a savings account, you could invest it and watch it potentially grow. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? But wait - before you start Googling investment apps and transferring money into a new account, theres something you need to keep in mind. Not all investment firms have the clients best interest in mind. We know, why wouldnt a big bank want to help its clients invest money and grow their wealth? Unfortunately, sometimes financial advisors or stockbrokers have other items on their agendas (like their own personal compensation desires). So the main thing you need to keep in mindbefore investing your moneyis whether or not the investment firm youre wanting to work with is a fiduciary. What is a fiduciary?Fiduci-what?A fiduciary (pronouncedfid-u-shi-ary ) is a person, like an accountant or a financial advisor, who acts on behalf of another person to make decisions for them. They are ethically bound to act in the best interests of the other person. You may think the accountant or financial advisor you use is a fiduciary, but you may be wrong. And youre not alone. According to a2017 study conducted by Personal Capital, 46 percent of Americans responded that they believe financial advisors are required by law to act in the best interests of their clients. However, they are not. In 2017, the U.S. Department of Labor began rolling out what they call the fiduciary rule, which would have required financial advisors to keep their clients best interests in mind at all times. Unfortunately, by June 2018,the rule was officially considered deadand no such law was put into place. So what does that mean for you, the client? Its time to aska lotmore questions before handing your money over. This includes your retirement, tax, investment and any oth er accounts you may have. Not sure what to ask your current or future financial advisor? Heres our list to get youstarted. Are you a fiduciary? How do you charge for your services? How much do you charge? What types of clients do you specialize in?Do you have a sample financial plan I could look at?Will you solely be managing my money, or will your team be involved, as well?Whats your investment strategy? How much communication will there be between us?Why should I work with you and your firm? With these answers stuffed into your back pocket, youll have a much clearer understanding of who is working with your money and in what ways. And that knowledge means power (not to mention much higher chances of growing your personal wealth). Pros and Cons of the Uberization of Work

Pros and Cons of the Uberization of WorkPros and Cons of the Uberization of WorkToday, nearly one in five jobs is performed by a part-time independent contractor or freelancer. Thats a 60 percent rise versus the number of jobs that part-timers held 15 years ago. This change in how we work has sometimes been referred to as the gig economy. And recently, it has also been referred to as the Uberization of the workplace, named after the ride sharing company Uber, which employs 4,000 full-timers and 156,000 part-timers- that is, only 2.5 percent of the people who rely on Uber for at least some of their earnings are full-time employees.Although Uber the company is relatively young, theUberization of work is nothing new. Uber, Lyft, Apple, and others certainly didnt invent the gig economy its been around for years. And, for better or worse, it seems to be here to stay.Uber is not so much a labor-market innovation as the culmination of a generation-long trend. Even before the founding of the company in 2009, the United States economy welches rapidly becoming an Uber economy writ large, with tens of millions of Americans involved in some form of freelancing, contracting, temping or outsourcing. The decades-long shift to these more flexible workplace arrangements, the venture capitalist Nick Hanauer and the labor leader David Rolf argue in the latest issue of Democracy Journal, is a transformation that promises new efficiencies and greater flexibility for employers and employees alike, but which threatens to undermine the very foundation upon which middle-class America was built. In other words, the Uberization of work is good for some, bad for others, and ugly for millions of middle class Americans.Heres one example of how it benefits workers.A company called HourlyNerd, based in Boston, connects alumni of top business schools and other specialized programs to companies with projects in need of completing, like market analysis or examinations of pricing strategy. The most sought-after experts enjoy a steady stream of work, earn well into six figures and can winter in Buenos Aires if they choose.I had an offer from another consulting firm, but I wanted more flexibility with my life, said Carlos Casteln, who started taking on HourlyNerd projects while still at Harvard Business School and now plans to build his career around the platform. I can work from home, have more control of my schedule.Sure, winters in Argentina arent bad. But if youre an older worker, with a family to support, youre not going to be taking the kids On the Road in between gigs anytime soon. And youre going to want some security, are you not?Last year, 23 percent of Americans told Gallup they worried that their working hours would be cut back, up from percentages in the low to midteens in the years leading up to the recession. Twenty-four percent said they worried that their wages would be reduced, up from the mid- to high teens before the recession. The following example from one attorney underlines this worry of those trying to support a family in the gig economyUnlike many of their colleagues in the fast-growing legal outsourcing and temping market, lawyers who work for Axiom, one of the industrys leading players, receive health insurance, paid time off, 401(k)s and money comparable to what they would make at a traditional firm or corporation. Yet many live with the uncertainty of not knowing how long they will go between assignments, during which time they earn no income from the company. When Im done with this job, it could be a month, two months before another one, said a lawyer who worked for Axiom until 2013 and requested anonymity to avoid drawing attention to her current employer. It was a stress point for me. My family depends on me.As for the ugly side of the gig economy, the middle class is shrinking while the concentration of wealth of the so-called 1 percent is rising. Which can be seen in the below NYT infographic, which shows shares of househo lds by income range. (Note middle income equals households earning between $35,000 and $100,000 per year.)In fact, the above was part of the focus of one presidential candidates address to Americans earlier today. In New York, at the New School, Hilary Clinton gave an economic address of sorts that set forth some of the economic issues shed focus on if elected. She spoke about enacting stricter financial regulation for Wall Street, tightening the gender wage gap, and increasing the minimum wage. She also spoke about the disheartening fact that the middle class was shrinking, thus making it more difficult than ever to get ahead. And, yes, she mentioned the gig economy, too. Heres part of the Atlantics take on Clintons speechShe seemed content to split the difference on many of the issues themselves. She spoke warmly of the new opportunities the gig economy- her term- has created, but also worried about the lack of workplace protections. Later, she vowed to crack down on employers who misclassify workers as contractors to deprive them of benefits, which could equally be a dig at the real goods economy, like FedEx, or the new-tech economy, like Uber. (Unlike Jeb Bush, who plans to cite Uber as a model, Clinton didnt mention the ride app by name.)In any case, where do you stand on the issue? Does the Uberization of work present more solutions than problems to the modern worker? Is it better for our economy or worse? Do you typically dial up Uber or Lyft?
